Meeting of Understanding

As the final interactive step of the membership process, we invite prospective members to meet with several members of the community for a Meeting of Understanding.  This is a crucial step, and we ask that all adults in your household and any other members you wish to include will attend.  It’s most helpful if we can hold this meeting in Flagstaff; however, if you and members of your household have already visited here, we can arrange the meeting as a video conference.  The meeting should be approximately 90 minutes to two hours long; however, we are happy to extend that time to be sure we fully address your questions and concerns.

This is an opportunity for us to have a dialogue about your expectations of community life and to review the community’s expectations as well.  Our objective is to help you to determine if Flagstaff Cohousing is a good fit for you.

To prepare for this meeting, we ask that each adult member of your household considers the questions below.  The questions will provide a starting point for our discussion, so it’s not necessary to write out your answers.  We do, however, encourage you to bring a list of your questions and concerns so that we can be sure to cover all of them.

We will also ask you to carefully review information about financial and building procedures as that information becomes available.

  • What draws you to community living and, specifically, to Flagstaff Cohousing?
  • What are you most looking forward to about living in Flagstaff Cohousing?
  • Do you have fears or concerns about community life?
  • Have you ever lived in a community setting before?  What did you learn from that experience?
  • Are you comfortable with the community vision statement we have identified?
  • What concerns do you have about living in community?  Are there any aspects of community that you anticipate might be difficult for you?

  • Do you have experience in any groups that made decisions based on consensus?
  • Are you willing to be trained and to participate in consensus-based decision making?
  • Do you intend to live in the community full time?  If not, what portion of the year do you anticipate living here, and how might this affect your participation in the community?
  • One of the unique elements of cohousing is the commitment to work together to accomplish the work and decision making of the community. How do you envision yourself participating?
  • What talents, skills and experiences do you see yourself sharing with the community?

  • We are actively seeking families with children to join our community. How do you see children in your life?
  • Do you have family members or friends who visit for extended periods or who might join your household at some time in the future?  Have you thought about how they will interact with the community?
  • Do you have pets living with you? If so, do you think they will transition well to community life?
  • Do you wish to share any special needs or circumstances that could help us to be better neighbors to you and the members of your household?

  • Do you have any questions about financial issues relating to Flagstaff Cohousing?
  • Do you have any questions about the financial agreements that new members are asked to initial on their membership form at the time of becoming a member?
